Abuse against women gone to far!

“Bucket” sentenced to life for killing his wife
A jealous forty year old Glenford “Bucket” Bermudez executed his wife on November twenty-second, 2007 and for taking her life, he will now spend the rest of his life behind bars. Glenford, an ex-B.D.F. soldier, was convicted on April twenty-seventh for the murder of Raquel Requeña Bermudez; the life sentence was handed down today by Justice Herbert Lord. In mitigation, Glenford’s ex-girlfriend spoke of his kind and loving nature, while he asked for leniency, even as he claimed he is innocent and that the police lied to the court. Justice Lord also stipulated that the sentence is effective today and that Glenford will get no remission for the three years he has already spent in jail. Raquel, a forty-one year old mother of seven, had recently separated from Glenford and the news of her new relationship sent him into a jealous rage. She was shot once in the head inside her taxi on the Boom/Hattieville Road and Glenford is said to have attempted suicide after killing her. Two days after his conviction, Glenford’s brother, Glenston Bermudez, joined him behind bars to serve a six month sentence. That’s because he pleaded guilty to Threat of Death and Common Assault upon two jurors that found his brother guilty of murder.
This is the worst case scenario for women. Death.. Its something you cant come back from. this is one girl pleading women all over the world to make a move at any sign of violence. The law is with you and here to protect you. I am not in your position but do you want your future daughters , grand daughters to be in yours? Make a stand for them and dont end up 7 ft under. It takes just one case of rage to send you there. Know when to say that its enough.
Isnt this a Sin?
rice of fish at the market goes up
Isani Caytetano, Reporting
The convergence of fishermen, aquatic birds and seafood lovers on Conch Shell Bay on Holy Thursday is a spectacle that never fails to amaze. Amidst the heavy traffic on nearby Vernon Street is the familiar din of a buzzing marketplace. On one side pelicans wander slowly and aimlessly along East Canal; on the other vendors engage potential buyers in their routine sales pitch.
Alfred Ramirez, Fish Vendor
“The fish dehn dah eight dollars right now. Right now gas expensive, yo goh out deh yo wah pay nine dollars, eight dollars, five dollars, six dollars. Gas dah twelve dollars a gallon yo check. Now I dah only di clean man ah cyant sell right now cause farm me usually buy and sell. Ah cyant sell because a di way di price dehn di go. So right now as yo notice ah di slice up dis barrow ya and di try hurry dis fi geh wah next job.”
Lennox Lino is one of few seafarers out here today. On display is a fresh catch of snappers, jacks and several other exotic fish lined across the bow of his vessel. It’s been a long morning for the seasoned fisherman, one that saw him heading out to sea in the wee hours.
Lennox Lino, Fisherman
“Normally we woulda just go out and ting a couple days and like right now fi dis Easter we just di try do wah lee ting. Right now we di sell fi like six or seven dollars a pound fuh di jack and ting right now yoh dig.”
While the price per pound of fish varies, consumers like Patrick Thompson have noticed a considerable spike this year as opposed to previous years he has bought fish here at Conch Shell Bay.
Patrick Thompson, Customer
“Hearing from different people, you know, I hear it is very much expensive and that is, the fishermen are saying, due to the raise [in the price] of fuel as well you know, so you know if the fuel raise the fishermen they have to raise their prices too, noh.”
What is apparent is that there is cause and effect between the ever-increasing costs of fuel and the price per pound of fish. As it is their pockets are severely hurting in the wake of the most recent price hike. But it’s a system of economics Lino has had to come to terms with. All the more difficult is that he, like his many friends in the fisheries industry, is having a hard time reeling in a decent catch.
Lennox Lino
“Ih really difficult right now cause di breeze and ting ahn like all di fish dehn noh really wahn eat and ting so yoh haffi really deh bout di look fih dehn and ting and di bait and ting haad fih find to so ih just scarce right now and ting like that.”
“Right now ih very, very difficult because yoh cyant go fishing weh yoh want due to di tourist season, tourist season weh dih een. [Wid] tourist yoh cyant go weh yoh wahn. So you go fishing weh paat di fish dehn di bite wid Maritime Wings or whatever yoh call dehn wah come pan yoh. Yoh cyant fishing there because it’s a protected area you know and that da weh di hambug we right now so wih noh di get di amount a fish weh wi wahn.”
Despite the scarcity of a generous catch a few fishermen, like my good friend Roy, were out boasting their haul. In his hand is a sizeable king fish, on the other end of the boat’s bow is a medium sized barracuda.
Patrick Thompson
“Honestly, some of the fish that I am seeing out here this morning they are very small, you know. To get the nice, average size fish you have to come out much earlier in the morning to get the size fish weh yoh woulda want. If yoh wait until now or later this evening the size might just get smaller.”
For those who were not able to beat today’s rush the fishermen who vend at the foot of the Vernon Street Bridge say they will be on hand tomorrow morning only. Reporting for News five, I am Isani Cayetano.
When we checked this afternoon, the market was abuzz with consumers doing their last minute purchases of the fish to be had on Good Friday.
I was appalled when i heard about this. I wanted to rage. This was just beyond any reason. These people are just chancy. Taking advantage of the season to make a rip off.
.Is Sugar Scarce?
Is sugar scarce?
The current sugar crop season, since it began on December fifteenth last year, has been plagued with numerous setbacks. Undoubtedly, the industry has been facing serious financial difficulties. The issues range from a much needed bailout last December to the shutting down of the factory at Tower Hill in the wake of mechanical failures in mid-February. Despite the resumption of operations recently there is still another problem looming. Over the past two weeks there has been a dearth in sugar being made available to the local market. For Stephen Okeke, proprietor of Joy Ice Cream & Juices, the scarcity has meant a complete halt in business.
Who will help me with the clashes
I am a 6th form student at SJC JC. I found out that i have a clash with my exam and i find out that i have to make arrangements to do my exams. I have mixed feelings about this. First of all exam is frustrating and second of all i had them 3 for monday and 3 for tuesday. Well i had a clash on tuesday. My teacher was able to help by offering a date for the exam sparing his free but yet busy time. These are the things i admire of a teacher. Willingness to understand and try to help. Although i do believe we should meet halfway. Thanks to that teacher i could have moved one of y 8 o clock exam to wednesday at 8 which gives me good breaks to study. Just in case i cant pack it all to one afternoon.
My Blog Experience ..
While doing this blog I found out that its easier to express my self through it. I could have voiced out my educated opinions through it and exercise my freedom of speech. I wasn't always to open to blogging but I still believe you have to truly be devoted to it in order to keep your followers interested and coming back. I think that it is great way to advertise a business or a product. As a student I believe it’s a good way to voice out everything that is bothering you or is becoming an issue in your life. Thinking about it having a blog for a class is a great way to keep in touch with your students. Something with that easy communication should not only be left to teachers but be used in every business aspect.
The Pressure is On.
Being a student with an overload i come to realize that there is a reason for not being able to take more than 6 subjects. I am a second year business administration and i unfortunetly couldn't keep up to my course requirements. I hand it assignments late because i had a big expo. It pretty much wore me out and left me with no strengths to continue. The heart was willing but the body and mind didnt respond. I am a person who does her work to the best of her ability and a bit of a perfectionist. I dont hand it poco tiempo work because i prefer to not hand it in. That is me and i cant say I dont believe in what i do. These last few weeks the pressure was on. Seven subjects for seven projects. As i said i dont like to give rubbish and i refuse to . Rather late than rubbish is what i say. Still trying to keep up i take in a last plunge to finish up all assignments and continue till the end. Help me god for it is so tiredsome. I believe that you reap what you soe so i shouldn't be that worried.
Reflection And Recommendation
I have read multiple news reports and its weird but yet expected which ones were the ones that caught my attention. These are things that I would write about. These things are based on our daily lives as Belizeans. If it is Capital Punishment or Negligence while driving. Many can relate to the fuel prices and the Abusive Relationships. These are issues that we must be involved in before it happens to us. We should try to prevent it before it gets bigger. We can lend support and not just let it go on like a hopeless case. We should fight and stand for what we believe in because as many people who did so before us know that it is not an easy task. It can take years or a revolution to show them that we are the voice and that we , Belizeans, say how it should go. Many of times I start to realize that if it wasn't for us Belize would be a better country. If we took a stand against violence, bribery , corruption, and many more things we could have strived for a better Belize. We are cowards, talking where no one can hear us, and keeping quiet expecting others to take the first step. Will I ever sit down during news and not hear a murder announcement. I wonder if I will ever hear one of my friends mentioned as a murder victim. Till where will we go until its to late? Will you as an individual cry for justice when a loved one has been robbed from your side? These are things to think about. I am a coward. I fear that I am not well equipped to defend my point and thus fail miserably. But if anyone would make a stand I would sure be there in solidarity. Sincerely these are the things I feel when reading through these reports. Angry for letting it get so out of hand.
Recommendation:
My recommendations are simple but I do believe it takes a lot to follow. I would find it hard to do sometimes if I was ever put to make a decision . Question is would I make the ethical choice? Would I know the ethical thing to do?
-I would simply say to fight for what you believe in. Its very simple but takes a lot more courage to do. You might need to stand against your family or friends but you would have a clear conscience.
-Another recommendation is to try your best to not support crime or any illegal or immoral activity. Its hard to do but always be open because the situation might not be what it appears to be. An example don't support contraband or don't buy stolen goods, don't bribe police officers or transport or any other public officer. It is hard for them not to do it for you to be offering it.
-Say no to extortions , this is where you need to take a stand and report these officers.
-Always follow the laws.
Yet another accident...
On Sunday afternoon shortly after one, thirty-nine year old Louise Bailey was driving from Hattieville en route to the Agric Show in Belmopan when her mini-van suffered a blow-out and caused her to overturn between miles forty six and forty seven on the Western Highway near the Hector Silva Airstrip. Travelling with Bailey were nine other children, including her daughter, fourteen year old Leshawn Young and ten year old Aniqua Fisher, who are both hospitalized in critical condition. Bailey said that contrary to media reports, she wasn’t speeding and her family is also suffering from the accident.
Louise Bailey, Involved in Accident

“Leshawn Young, she is like a vegetable. She just pee, ih can’t control her urine, like di left side of her isn’t working well, she can’t do anything, she have to drink through straw, she have to sip through straw or anything like dat suh. It was so scary. And I just want to say to the mother that her apology is accepted and I just wah she know that I would neva do anything fuh harm dah child nor my child or even myself. I wah mek di mother know that I neva mi di speed up cause if I mi di speed up with nine people in the vehicle we wouldn’t have some ah wi right now. I just sorry fi weh happen but I still ker deh children cause deh dah my children children yuh nuh and I just sorry fi weh happen but it’s a front wheel blow-out but I couldn’t do nothing I tried my best fi keep it up.”
Reaction:
I cant relate to this but I have had a blow out in the high way and I didn't turn over. I was going 60 and my front tire popped. I don't want to accuse anyone because she might just be telling the truth. When I got my license to be a driver I knew the consequences of what a crash would bring. All the damages to be paid. Of course the worst thing that can happen is that I injure someone with my driving. Its obvious it’s a great responsibility. My mom once told me to be careful when I have passengers in the vehicle. She told me one thing is your life and its valuable but another thing is when you have the responsibility of others life because you permit them in your vehicle. Not that you wanted to crash but I can be seen as negligence or driving without due care and attention. Many things can be pinned on you. As a responsible driver I know to check my tires and my engine before I hit the road. Many things can go wrong. So far I have been without a bad traffic accident. To me there is no reason to temp the devil.
In the drivers defense I know that although u try your best to drive responsible things do happen. I have been crashed before by negligent drivers. I feel bad for this lady. The responsibility of that child’s health will stay on her conscience for the rest of her life. These are things you wouldn't forget. This might have been able to be avoided. She said that she wasn't speeding but how much was she driving. Probably she was driving 50 but that is speeding when it comes to a highway like the western highway. Its amazing but I can be next or anyone in the same room as me. These things aren't always avoidable but you can make sure you try your best to prevent it.
Abuse against women...
There are many forms of abuse against women; domestic, sexual or physical. A study conducted by a relatively new organization has found that as many as twenty-three percent of women they surveyed have been abused by their partners. And while victims may not be rushing to make reports, a higher number of persons know of victims who have suffered from domestic violence.
The Women’s Circle of Belize is a community based organization advocating to end violence against women. The group has completed a survey to gain a better understanding of how grave the situation has gotten.
Debra Lewis, Member, Women’s Circle of Belize said : “This really was an issue that we could take on and move forward over the long term. So one of the things that we thought was important was that we need to be in the community talking to the women to find out what experiences they are having, what do they need, what do they think would help their situations and so that’s basically why we did the survey. We had decided we wanted to survey a hundred women; we ended up with a hundred and sixteen women that the two surveyors went out and did the surveys in the community. Together we looked at all the figures and we spent two very long meetings putting all the numbers together and then we took it and wrote up the report that we released today.”
The surveyors made several observations about the response of the women they interviewed, including that many of them do not fully understand what “violence against women” is. Some of the more startling results include that twenty-three point three percent of surveyed women had been beaten by their partner and fifty-four point three percent knew someone it happened to. Six percent of those women were hospitalized because of the beatings while forty-four percent knew of others who experienced the same. In the area of sexual offences, two point six percent of participants had been raped while thirty-eight point eight percent said they knew rape victims. One point seven percent said they were sexually harassed at their job while sixteen point four percent knew other victims.
Reaction:
I can see where this is coming from. I cant relate since I have never been abused. I feel like it has to do with our culture. Back in the day when women only lived to serve the man because of what is now known as sexual discrimination. Back in the day it was a way of life but now it is a crime. There is no need for women to have to go through that. I am a young lady and I hope never to be a victim of that. Sincerely I understand that some women might have gotten in that situation by not knowing what they were truly getting into. Probably the now sweet boyfriend ends up being a abusive psychopath. I have seen that one happen. My advice to those women wouldn’t be considered because their first response would be how would I know if I don't know what they are going through. Many women are practically disowned by their parents when they refuse to take them back. Its sad and I am glad to know that my family has a futuristic but traditional view on things. My mom once told me that I wasn't raised to be beaten by man.
The rate is alarming, I had hoped to not stumble through it as many women might have hoped to. We as women need to know our rights and be able to defend ourselves. We already know that women are being abused. The answers of what I want to hear is why do they allow such a thing. That is what it might take us a step closer to avoiding women to be abused.
Fuel Prices
On April third, the prices of fuel went up again. If you have already hit your budget with all the excess money the last time it went up then this time its worst. Another fuel hike is in the works at midnight tonight which will put the price of premium above the twelve dollar mark and at its highest yet. The premium will face a whopping increase of sixty-four cents and consumers will now be paying twelve dollars and thirteen cents per gallon and it will be retailing at twelve dollars and thirteen cents per gallon. According to their research, even when the barrel of crude stood at one hundred and forty dollars on the international market, premium was selling at eleven dollars and seventeen cents, almost a dollar per gallon less than it will be at midnight. When they checked again, the price for crude is hovering at one hundred and five dollars, which means that we are paying more at the pumps even though crude is far cheaper. But how high can they go? We do not know the answer to that question but can warn you that regular, will go up by fifty cents, which will put the gallon price at eleven dollars and sixty-seven cents. Diesel will be going up by fifty-five cents to a high of ten dollars and ninety-seven cents and in the case of kerosene, that’s goes up fifty cents, and will be retailing at eight dollars and seventy-seven cents. This changes all budgets.
Reaction:
All I have to say is that I remember the day it used to cost seven dollars and change. Why is it so high? I believe that this effects our whole economy. As a concerned Belizean I wonder if a vehicle might be to expensive for a family to maintain? Although it is good for the environment but a little difficult for every bodies schedules is car pooling the way to go? I know the bus is a good way but that is before. It’s a fact that goes up and everything else is soon to follow. I am thinking its because of transportation fees. The reality is too much to bear for a already caving economy. If this keeps up then people will start to revolt at such high prices. I question how long will it be until we can no longer afford the daily necessities. I consider myself well of because of family but I cant imagine those who already was barely making it with low salaries. As an economics student when they check the basket to see if we Belizeans need a raise do they factor in how high the rate of fuel has gone up. Have they noticed that it is in everyone daily needs even if it is through car pooling, personal vehicle or bus. It goes up all other prices fallow. I have first hand seen how a family with two parents and four children live day by day. How will they do it? Admitting it or not you can say that you depend on transportation and thus fuel. Distances are now too far to walk and if its walkable will I have to take over 40 minutes to walk to my destination. Something must be done about this fuel increase. The next time it increases I will be afraid to see the ripple effect it releases among the public.
Capital Punishment... Is it Back?
Posted on May 13, 2011
The House of Representatives met in Belmopan to conclude :With the country’s murder toll at forty nine within five months of the year, a series of controversial measures and constitutional amendments were introduced that are sure to bring debate not only from across the floor, but from local and foreign entities. The amendment to the Crime Control and Criminal Justice Bill intends to zone in on gang related activities and increase penalties for related crimes. But it’s the amendments to the Belize Constitution that may bring both praise and fury from the public, human rights organizations and the church. Prime Minister Dean Barrow intends to bring back the death penalty with the Belize Constitution (Eight Amendment) Bill 2011. Clause four of the amendment refers to inhuman or degrading punishment and treatment. The proposed constitutional change will allow for the death sentence to be executed.
P.M. Dean Barrow says that if the vote is majority they are going to put back the sentence to hang to death without any defendant being able to challenge the death penalty. He also stated that it would bring problems with the public and internationally. He continues stating that its European democracies insist on that its inhuman or degrading but that he believes that they don't live in a small society like us, Belizeans and that they aren't the ones living through all the bad experiences.
Barrow says that the amendment will also free the courts of cases that are delayed on death penalty appeals.
Reaction:
This might be seen as insensitive, but I say its about time. Many people might see me as an insensitive person for wishing that the death penalty come back into play with our laws. I ask myself have they spoken with the family of victims. Do they know the pain? The only one fearing the law or the death penalty are those who are afraid to or planning to break it. As an individual I wouldn't break the law and therefore not need to be hanged. I am not sure if others can say the same. This article was short and sweet to my ears. I hope I can see the day when I can trust to walk on the streets without fear. When I know that the murder victim toll will go down and that me ,my family and loved ones would be safe. Its obvious that the laws aren't working probably because its not implemented or because it is to lenient for the crimes committed.
This is the most controversial news I have heard in my life time. I want to be more ethical and say they are human, they deserve better, but my gut is saying are they really humans? They would have to be humans for this to be an inhuman action. For me if they can kill coldly and without remorse and continue with the murders there is nothing human about that person. I care about the safety of all those Belizeans that fear for their lives. Who want to live a peaceful life not fretting to be the next rape ,murder ,theft or stabbed victim. Something must be done. I say that this amendment should be voted on and implemented into our legal system.
They are rumors that the jail that is paid with tax payers money is too good for them. That they look at it like a vacation, free from bills . Why are we spending so much of our tax payers money on something like that. What do they deserve? The Jail system worked before when it was hard and not exactly cruel but strict. That was its purpose. To serve as an option and punishment not a vacation or rehab. Back where the days when criminals deserved what they got and tried their best not to end up in a place like that.
